Tornado warnings issued in multiple Franklin County towns in Western Massachusetts

UPDATE: The tornado warning for north-central Franklin County has been canceled. According to the National Weather Service, no damage reports were received either “because the strong signatures for wind/tornadic activity stayed aloft or in rural areas.”

Forecasters warned of the potential for tornados touching down in multiple Western Massachusetts communities Tuesday morning.

Tornado warnings were issued in the Franklin County towns of Charlemont, Hawley and Rowe, according to the National Weather Service.

In their warnings, which were expected to last until 9:30 a.m., forecasters said the Pioneer Valley communities may also see penny-sized hail.

Officials said tornadoes may touch down in three other towns in Franklin County, including Colrain, Heath and Shelburne Falls. The warning will last until 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms and 60-mile-per-hour winds are forecast in the communities and in the town of Buckland.

More than 5,000 residents may be impact by the severe weather system, forecasters said.
