25-year-old Francis Ermilio of Shrewsbury dies in Colorado ski resort accident

The 25-year-old Massachusetts man who died in a skiing accident Saturday at a Colorado resort has been identified by police as Francis Ermilio of Shrewsbury.

Ermilio was at the Winter Park Resort in Winter Park, Colorado and skiing with friends on Saturday, the Fraser Winter Park Police Department said.

Ermilio became separated with his group of friends near the Whistle Stop and Dormouse runs around 4:20 p.m.

“His friends waited for him at the Resort Base, and then notified Winter Park Ski Patrol when he did not arrive in a reasonable amount of time,” police said.

The ski patrol began searching for Ermilio. He was located around 7:35 p.m.

Ermilio, according to police, was unresponsive and had head and facial wounds. He was located in some trees near the White Rabbit Run.

“Rescue efforts were initiated at the scene, and Ermilio was transported to the Denver Health Clinic where he was pronounced dead at about 8:24 p.m.,” the police department said.

A preliminary investigation showed Ermilio was “not an experienced skier” but he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

“Evidence at the scene indicates that Ermilio may have lost control while descending the White Rabbit run, skied into a forested area, and suffered fatal injuries after colliding with several trees,” police said.

An autopsy will determine cause and manner of death.
