The weight of snow caused a roof collapse that led to six row homes being condemned in Bangor, displacing 17 people, reported the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Red Cross, which was summoned to provide shelter early Friday morning.

Only one of the row homes actually suffered a roof collapse, and the other five were vacated as a safety precaution said AJ Suero, regional communications manager for the American Red Cross, Lehigh-Bucks and Tri-County Region.

No injuries were reported.

The weight of snow caused a roof collapse that led to six row homes being condemned on Friday in Bangor Borough. There were 17 people displaced.

The home where the collapse occurred had been vacant for some time, said Bangor Borough Manager Nathaniel Dysard. There was no visible damage at the other five units, one of which was also unoccupied.

The homes are located in the 300 block of South Main Street.

The Red Cross was contacted around 5 a.m. Friday morning to provide shelter for the nine adults and eight children, Suero said.

“The dwellings are now considered structurally unsafe,” Suero said, adding that firefighters are investigating to determine the extent of the damage.

It wasn’t immediately clear Friday afternoon when or if the families might be able to return to the units.

“The borough is working diligently to assess the structure and make a determination on the safety of the neighboring properties to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the residents,” Dysard said.
