Wednesday BP: Vacation at the Volcanoes stadium

Hello friends, happy Wednesday.

There hasn’t been a San Francisco Giants game to watch in about two and a half months. That’s a big bummer. But if you’ve got the baseball itch, well . . . look, this won’t exactly scratch it, but it will at least make you smile, hopefully.

The Oregon stadium for the Giants short-season affiliate Salem-Keizer Volcanoes is currently being listed on Airbnb (hat tip to KNBR for finding this).

Here’s part of the description on the listing, and I gotta admit, it sounds promising:

Not only will you have full access to the clubhouse, you will also have full access to the Volcanoes’ 5,000 square foot training/hitting facility featuring 4 indoor batting cages setup for baseball and/or softball. Pitching machines will be there for your use and enjoyment as well as batting helmets, bats and balls.

Bring your sleeping bags to maximize the use or we can also supply cots.

Guests will also have exclusive use of the baseball field during their stay. Full batting practice can be setup for you – see if you have warning track power or can actually hit one out of the Stadium! Or, simply play catch – like your own Field of Dreams.

Hot dang, that sounds fun, and at $1000 a night, it’s pretty affordable if you’re taking a large group. Not exactly a very good way to social distance, though . . .

It’s worth noting that this money does not go to the Giants. While the organization’s affiliate plays there, minor league facilities are rented to clubs (which is why, for instance, the Sacramento River Cats were an Oakland A’s affiliate before they became a Giants one).

Did Barry Bonds hit a home run today?

Yup.

May 27, 1998: Against the Cincinnati Reds, Bonds hit a 2-run home run in the 6th inning off of Eddie Priest, scoring Bill Mueller. It gave the Giants a 5-2 lead, but they would lose 7-5. It was his 13th homer of the year.

May 27, 2001: Against the Colorado Rockies, Bonds hit a 2-run home run in the 1st inning off of Denny Neagle, scoring Jeff Kent. It gave the Giants a 3-0 lead, and the would win 5-4. It was his 26th homer of the year.

May 27, 2002: Against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bonds hit a solo home run in the 5th inning off of Brian Anderson. It gave the Giants a 4-1 lead, and they would win 7-3. It was his 18th homer of the year.

May 27, 2007: Against the Colorado Rockies, Bonds hit a 2-run home run in the 6th inning off of Taylor Buchholz, scoring Rich Aurilia. It pulled the Giants to within 4-3, but they would lose 6-4. It was his 12th homer of the year.
