CONCORD — A man died Friday afternoon after a struggle with police officers who were responding to a 911 call at a local homeless shelter, according to a Concord police news release.

The man’s name and age were not immediately released. Police say he showed signs of medical distress — and ultimately died — as officers were trying to bring him into custody.

It all started around 4 p.m. Friday, when staff at the Concord Homeless Shelter at 2047 Arnold Industrial Way called 911 to report a disturbance. Concord officers — as well as a sheriff’s deputy — responded to find the man, “acting erratically, yelling, and being violence,” a police news release says.

“The man continued to act erratically while being detained and began to exhibit signs of being in medical distress,” says the news release, which was issued around 11:45 p.m. Friday. “Officers called for emergency medical aid and attempted to revive the man who had now become unresponsive.”

Paramedics later arrived at the scene but the man was declared dead.

Like all officer-involved or in custody deaths in Contra Costa, the District Attorney joined the investigation. At some point, the man’s death will be reviewed by a coroner’s inquest jury, which will determine a cause of death in a ruling that carries no criminal nor civil liability.

This is the first officer-involved fatality involving Concord police in 2019.

A police spokesman did not immediately return requests for comment.

Police say anyone with information on the man’s death can call Concord police Det. Giacoletto at 925-671-3040 or you may contact our anonymous tip-line at 925-603-5386.
