OAKLAND – The last time the Warriors saw DeMarcus Cousins, he hobbled off the court in pain. So when the Warriors saw Cousins at the practice facility exactly a week after suffering a likely post-season injury with a torn left quad muscle, the Warriors did not exactly see Cousins in the best mood.
After all, Warriors coach Steve Kerr reiterated it is “highly unlikely” Cousins would return during the NBA playoffs.
“Not great as you’d expect,” Kerr said about Cousins’ spirits. “But it was good to see him.”
Cousins did not travel with the Warriors on their two-game trip last week in Los Angeles for their first-round playoff series against the Clippers. With the Warriors back home though, Cousins rehabbed at the team’s practice facility on Tuesday and sat in on the team’s film session. He also plans to attend Game 5 of the Warriors-Clippers first-round series on Wednesday at Oracle Arena.
Stephen Curry was not among the Warriors’ players that spoke to Cousins. But Curry expressed sympathy for Cousins, who had rehabbed for nearly a year on a torn left Achilles tendon. That injury depressed the four-time All-Star’s free agency value last summer, prompting the Warriors to sign him with their tax-payer mid-level exception ($5.3 million). Cousins tore his left quad muscle in Game 2 against the Clippers.
“It’s a tough situation,” Curry said. “Him having him go through this situation and have him go through the process again and sit on the sidelines and wait, I know it’s helpful to have a guy’s back at the facility. Him being at the game tomorrow and all that type of stuff, those little things matter.”
Cousins plans to be around the team consistently so he can rehab with Dr. Rick Celebrini, the Warriors’ director of sports medicine and performance.
“We’ll see what happens in a few weeks once we have a better sense of his healing,” Kerr said, “and his ability to maybe get on the court.”
