of July will cheer Trump

Re: “How Trump is desecrating the United States’ birthday” (Opinion section, June 19):

I usually agree with Eugene Robinson’s point of view, but I think he got it wrong this time.

Since our narcissistic president is inserting himself into the national Independence Day celebration in Washington, D.C., by making a speech at the Lincoln Memorial, Robinson predicts that the whole thing will turn into a giant Trump rally because only his supporters will show up and his foes will tend to stay away. I see it differently.

Trump always speaks to an audience of carefully screened loyal supporters. But this country is also full of people who strongly dislike and resent him but have never had an opportunity to express it to him. I think there will be just as many folks that go there to voice (shout, jeer, boo) their disapproval directly to him.

I hope Trump changes his mind before this traditional day of family fun, music and fireworks degenerates into mayhem.
