SAN JOSE — A man who died in a suspected DUI crash last week on the night of his birthday has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as 52-year-old Anthony Harris.

On July 4 at about 11:45 p.m., Harris — a Campbell resident — was a passenger in a 2018 Range Rover Velar which plummeted about 150 feet down an embankment on Mt. Hamilton Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, Latoya Phillips of Campbell, was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and remains in custody with no bail allowed, according to authorities. Phillips is scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

Phillips told the CHP that she and Harris spent the evening at the Grandview Restaurant on Mt. Hamilton Road and were driving home when the crash occurred.

It took firefighters and the CHP about about 30 minutes to get to the scene on Mt. Hamilton Road a few miles east of 3 Springs Road, Officer Ross Lee said. Officers spotted the Velar’s taillights down the embankment, and then located Phillips, who made her way up the embankment with the help of a motorist who stopped to help.

Phillips told officers and firefighters that Harris was still inside the Velar and needed help. When paramedics and firefighters reached Harris after midnight, he was pronounced dead.
