CONCORD — A man shot to death outside a Motel 6 here last month had shown up to the crime scene with a gun, and may have been set up, police said in recently-released court records.

Daniel “Danny Boy” Schrader, 36, was shot to death outside a ground floor room at the motel, around 11:15 p.m. July 12. Minutes before he was killed, Schrader arrived at the motel with another man, later identified as Adam Renfroe, 32, of Brentwood. They both were armed with pistols, according to police.

The shooting and moments leading up to it were captured on surveillance footage, which police wrote in a sworn statement covers nearly every part of the area around the motel. In the video, Renfroe and Schrader are seen making their way to a room on the ground floor.

As they approached the door, Renfroe allegedly shoved Schrader, who was then shot by someone inside the room. The footage showed Renfroe take several quick steps away, then fire a shot in the direction of the hotel room and Schrader’s lifeless body, according to police.

Afterward, a man later identified as Bay Point resident Robert Brown, 38, emerged from the hotel room. He and Renfroe appeared to have a short conversation from several feet apart, then left in separate cars.

After conducting witness interviews, authorities determined Schrader had been suspicious that his wife was cheating on him, and that Brown and Schrader’s wife were together in the hotel. Brown is suspected of firing the initial shots from inside the room.

Adding to the mystery, both Renfroe and Schrader have ties to the Family Affiliated Irish Mafia gang, according to court records.

Renfroe was arrested two weeks ago, in South Dakota, after eluding police for several days. He was transported to Contra Costa County jail Aug. 6, according to public records, on a murder warrant and for missing a court date in a car theft and burglary case. Prosecutors are expected to review the case and decide whether to charge Renfroe early next week.

Brown has still not yet been arrested, but is being sought by the U.S. Marshal Service.
