Casey Barrett, Mile High Report

It’s Kevin Hogan hour in the Mile High city for the next week.

With rookie Drew Lock sidelined by a hand sprain and starter Joe Flacco sidelined because there is no point for starters to play in these final two preseason games, Hogan will get his chance to make some waves. Rookie Brett Rypien looks like he will get some opportunities as well.

The Denver Broncos will be on the road in this first of their final two preseason games. This one against the Los Angeles Rams. Head Coach Vic Fangio has little interest in playing the teams’ core starter and Rams’ Head Coach Sean McVay has already let the world know he wouldn’t be playing any starters either.

Instead, we’ll have to look for position battles that will determine the final 53-man roster heading into Week 1 of the regular season.

Here is how to watch.

Matchup history

The Broncos and Rams are familiar preseason opponents, but one where one team has consistently beaten over the last three decades. Denver owns am 8-2 all-time preseason record against the Rams, including the last six dating back to 1987. Don’t get too hyped about that, because quite the opposite is true in the regular season where the Broncos are a lackluster 5-9 against the Rams all-time.

Broncos podcasts

In this weeks’ MHR Radio podcast, Ian St. Clair and Adam Malnati break down the growth of Garett Bolles and whether or not the Broncos will need to figure out their long-term left tackle situation next season.

In this week’s Broncos & Bratwurst, Kevin Gillikin loved everything he saw from Emmanuel Sanders and his first game action since his Achilles injury last December. Sanders’ plays will be key to the Broncos offense this season.

The Something Something Broncos podcast kind of bagged on Bolles a bit this week despite Fangio noting that the 55-yard holding penalty No. 72 committed last week was more on the tight end than Bolles. But it is clear frustration is mounting with the third-year tackle. The good news, after getting on Bolles a bit, they moved on to the remaining two preseason games and why special teams is where it’s at in these games.
