Day-tripping families were terrified as a mass brawl broke out at a seaside resort on bank holiday Monday.

Barry Island, made famous by hit BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey , descended into chaos, as this shocking footage shows.

Group of teens are seen throwing furniture and chasing each other as stunned parents and their youngsters looked on.

One eyewitness said "swarms" of youths suddenly appeared and the incident left their children in tears, Wales Online reported.

They said: "It sort of all erupted from nothing. It was all normal and fine, we were queueing up to get some doughnuts and ice cream and we started to hear some shouting.

"There was swarms of young people just piling into that middle section and they seemed to just appear.

"They were all fighting, jumping on each other and shouting. It all went off."

They added that a number of nearby workers came out to try and calm the situation down.

The eyewitness added: "Then they just went crazy and starting running around, onto people's cars and they were shouting at everyone.

"I just ran into the arcade with my children who were crying."

After the incident they said some of the youths shouted "the police are coming" and they all dispersed.

Marco Zeraschi, of Marco's cafe, said the incident ruined what was a "beautiful" weekend for Barry Island.

The businessman said: "It's disgraceful. To act like that when there's young people about."

He added: "It ruined the day for a lot of people. I'm very dissapointed.

"It gives Barry Island a lot of bad publicity which it does not need [but] it's a one off, it's not something that occurs every day."

The eyewitness, who filmed the incident, said: "I didn't do it for amusement or anything like that, it was to help people and make them aware and to help the police."

“Enquiries are ongoing into this incident and I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information which could assist the investigation to get in touch.

“We continue to carry out high-visibility patrols on the island in particular during the busy holiday periods.

"I understand the concerns of local traders and the community, and would like to reassure them that we are working closely with partners to clamp down on anyone intent on causing trouble in the area.”
