One person has died after a minibus carrying 24 people overturned on a road in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services responded to accident on the A6089 between Carfraemill and Gordon, near Lauder, earlier this morning.

One person was declared dead at the scene while the driver and 22 injured passengers were taken to Borders General Hospital, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

Police Scotland said in a statement: "We can confirm that a person has died and a number of people have been taken to hospital after a minibus overturned in the Scottish Borders.

"The incident took place on the A6089, between Carfraemill and Gordon, around 10.50am on Saturday 29th December.

"The private minibus, travelling from Newtongrange to Kelso, was carrying 23 adult passengers plus the driver.

"One person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and their next of kin have now been informed."

According to Scottish Radio Station TD1, off duty NHS staff are being asked to attend work at the Borders General Hospital.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue service was alerted at 10:55am on Saturday, December 29 to reports of a road traffic collision in the Scottish Borders.

"Operations Control mobilised four fire engines to the A6089, close to the village of Gordon, where fire fighters assisted their emergency service partners."

The A6089 is closed in both directions near Lauder and Gordon with police saying it "will remain closed for some time".

Lauder is located on the Southern Upland Way, around 27 miles southeast of Edinburgh.

Member of Scottish Parliament Paul Wheelhouse tweeted: "Am aware of incident and very worried about it, but not wanting to get under the feet of emergency services by asking for further information while they are needing to focus on those affected at present. Can only hope that not as serious as news implies."

MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk also tweeted: "Thoughts are with everyone affected".

Chief Inspector Steven Duncan of the Lothians & Scottish Borders Police Division said: "We're providing ongoing support to the family of the man who tragically lost his life, along with those who have been injured and their families.

"Our Road Policing Unit, together with partners, are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this.

"We'd ask anyone who may be concerned that a loved one has been affected, or anyone who could help with our investigation, to get in touch immediately via 101 and quote incident number 1369 of 29th December."
