A father-of-three has developed a giant swollen head due to a mystery disease that has since left him blind.

Romulo Pilapil, 56, from Ormoc City in the Philippines first contracted sinusitis leaving him with itchy eyes and cold-like symptoms lasting for nearly three years.

He first visited his local doctor who gave him medication, but his condition failed to improve.

Romulo's last trip to the doctor was in 2018 as he could not afford to continue treatment.

Doctors advised him to go to a hospital in Manila but his family could not finance his medical bills any longer.

His facial features have swollen up to four times their usual size, with inflated lips, cheeks and eyes protruding out.

The father has since lost his eyesight due to the swelling, leaving him jobless as he is unable to continue his work as a carpenter.

Romulo's nephew John Santos said: "His eyes looked irritated that day, and his nose was red.

"He had colds so everybody thought it was sinusitis, then his face started to swell."

Romulo's three children have since taken up jobs to take care of their father.

They work alternating shifts so one person can be with Romulo at all times.

His wife has also taken a job as a street sweeper to provide for her family.

Romulo added: "They are good people who don’t deserve this. I hope they can get help soon."
