Gareth Southgate could give James Maddison and Mason Mount their England debuts next month as the pair look set to be drafted into the first-team squad.

Both players impressed during Leicester's match with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in front of Southgate's assistant Steve Holland.

Mount , 20, only made his Chelsea debut 10 days ago in their season opener with Man Utd, but Holland is believed to have delivered a glowing report to Southgate, according to Sky Sports .

The Blues youngster was on loan at Derby last season, and was included in the full England squad back in October.

Maddison has also been involved in one England camp before, having received a call-up to the same squad as Mount.

Neither player featured in the Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain, but could make their debuts in England's Euro 2020 qualifiers in September.

England host Bulgaria and Kosovo on September 7 and 10 respectively, with Southgate due to name his initial 26-man squad next week.

Maddison was disappointed to have been overlooked for England's side for the Nations League finals back in June.

The 22-year-old had a scintillating debut season in the Premier League with the Foxes, becoming the first English player in six campaigns to create over 100 chances for his team.

One player who looks set to miss out on Southgate's group is Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The 26-year-old has had a nightmare start to the season, and made two errors in his sides loss to Preston on Wednesday.

Stoke boss Nathan Jones blamed rumours Butland was to be omitted from the England set-up as a distraction for his keeper.

"We are travelling on the bus and there's a big story about Jack being left out of the England squad, it's all unsettling," he said.

"Maybe I need to put him out of the firing line and wait until the window shuts to get his head focused because all the stories are about what's not happening to Jack rather than him being Stoke City goalkeeper."
