Puff, puff, pass. Then munch, eat and snack.

Now that Michigan's new law legalizing marijuana use for adults 21 and older has gone into effect, we're betting Michigan restaurants will be serving more clientele who are finding themselves with a bad case of the munchies.

And the marijuana munchies are no joke. Research has shown the drug's active ingredient - THC - gives a jolt to the part of the brain that stimulates our appetite.

So food might not only smell better to someone who has had a few hits of pot, but taste more amazing, too.

It might be why the greasiest, cheesiest, crunchiest, saltiest - and generally the naughtiest -foods out there are the ones that seem to be the most popular choices for the 4:20 crowd.

We've put together a list of some of Michigan's Best places to get super delicious food to indulge in after you've imbibed. Actually, these places are top-notch for everyone, on any day of the year.

We've included many of our top picks for Michigan's Best, plus added some of our top chain restaurant dishes as well.

Coney dogs

This should be a no-brainer for Michiganders. We love these bad boys no matter what the weather, or our state of mind. The great thing about a coney is that they are portable, and hand-held for easy eating. Lightly spiced coney sauce won't freak you out, while that soft bun will soothe you. Don't be surprised by the snap of a good dog, that is exactly what you want. Put it all together with some sharp onions and a bright mustard and we dare you to just eat one.

Check out our picks from 2012 for Michigan's Best Coney Dog.

Great places to get a coney dog:

American Coney, Detroit

Lafayette Coney, Detroit

Mussell Beach Drive-In, Bay City

Starlite Diner and Coney Island, Flint

Virginia's Coney Island, Jackson

Coney Island, Kalamazoo

Grand Coney, Grand Rapids

G&L Chili Dogs, Muskegon

Get down and dirty with some wings.

There is something infinitely satisfying getting deep into a mess of chicken wings, with sauce all over the place, and a pile of bones by your side. You feel proud of yourself, like you actually have accomplished something pretty great. Because you have. You've taken those wings down, and probably in a record-setting time, too.

You can get wings at several chain restaurants, which we really don't recommend for the most part. Find out why here.

Our top pick for chain wings was the surprising Applebee's.

During that taste test, all the judges agreed the flavor, meatiness and sauce all reminded us of what wings should taste like.

And isn't that how it rolls with chicken wings? Sometimes you just crave that crispy tender juicy meat slathered in a vinegary hot sauce. I know my mouth is watering right now, and I need to go find some wings.

We highly recommend checking out some of our picks for Michigan's Best chicken wings. You can order ahead, then warm them back up in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Do NOT microwave wings, they'll hate you for ruining their crispy skin.

Check out some of our favorites, you can read about all of our top 11 picks here.

Sweetwater Tavern, Detroit

-One flavor only, trust us, these are the perfect representation of a well-done chicken wing. Several locations throughout Metro Detroit, the kitchens are open till 2 am, 7 days a week.

The Bar at 327 Braun Court, Ann Arbor

-Feeling adventuresome after a taste of the devil's lettuce? Then Braun Court's wings are for you. Some of the most creative flavors in Michigan. I'm a big fan of the spicy Szechuan.

Wheaty's Pub, Manistique

-Super solid wings at this neighborhood bar in the U.P. The garlic parmesan are the most popular with good reason, but it's some of owner Nick Wheaton's unique flavors that will get those taste buds flowing.

Sporty's Wing Shack and Smokehouse, Pinconning

-Stay clear of the Suicide Wing Challenge (trust me) and instead go for the inspired PB&J wings, or the classically awesome medium. There are 26 sauces to choose from, but if that many options leave you befuddled, don't worry, they're all great.

Wing Doozy, Grand Rapids

-Three locations to serve you around GR, damn fine wings, plus lots of other fried goodies. Try the tomato-based garlic parmesan sauce, top notch.

Rocky Top Beer and BBQ, Jackson

-Wings are smoked (on a wood fired smoker people, not THAT kind of smoked) then deep fried for super flavor and extra crispiness. Bones too much to handle at the moment? They make their own homemade version of boneless wings at Rocky Top.

Miss Molly's Diner, Clarkston

-Straight up classic wings from Miss Molly herself, who was born and raised in the birthplace of wings, Buffalo, New York. Served with both carrots and celery like they do in NY, you can feel like you made a "healthy" choice here.

Union Woodshop, Clarkston

-You don't even need sauce on these wings, but they offer several delicious homemade sauces anyway. Wings are smoked, coated in brown sugar and a spice rub, then deep fried into crunchy meaty heaven.

Fairway Bar and Grill, Eastpointe

-Classic Detroit neighborhood dive bar with homemade sauces. We loved the classic Buffalo and a great garlic parmesan. On Mondays, get wings for just 60 cents.

Rockford Brewing Company, Rockford

-Ride your bike up the White Pine Trail to RBC and order up these incredible wings. Braised in lard (yep, the greatest of the fats) then deep fried, they get doused in Chef Ryan's creative sauces, including the mega hot SMAUG sauce.

Cellar Brewing Company, Sparta

-Keep the giggles under control while you eat the "Chuckalo" sauce, a tangy and sweet version of a classic Buffalo. These are jumbo wings, super meaty and filling.

Waldo's Campus Tavern, Kalamazoo

-A recent re-visit to Waldo's revealed that their Mixed Grill wings are even better than we remembered. Incredibly crispy, they get coated in a nicely balanced sauce that has both hints of BBQ and heat, along with a bit of spice.

Hot Beef from Ray Ray's in Kalamazoo. Amy Sherman | MLive.com

Don't Edit

Any kind of hot beef or cheesesteak.

There is something very satisfying about diving into a Chicago-style hot beef sandwich loaded with spicy giardiniera and having all those rich flavor juices run right down your arms. Let it flow, and let it go, that's the point of a great hot beef.

If you are not into a super big mess, than opt for a more compact classic cheesesteak, that, while loaded, has the binding power of cheese behind it for a bit less mess.

Some of our favorites:

Ray Ray's Italian Sausage, Kalamazoo

This is one of the greatest hot beef Chicago-style sandwiches ever. Owner Robert Gutierrez roasts his own beef, then hand pulls it and lets it soak in the super flavorful juice. When ready to serve, he piles it into his perfect, custom baked bun, and then tops it with his homemade, fresh giardiniera.

Get it "wet" and you have a two-handed wonder that will leave you an absolute mess, with beefy juices running down your chin, and giardiniera in you lap, but you could not be happier after eating one of these.

We visited during our search for Michigan's Best french fries, of which Ray Ray's is in the Top Ten in Michigan. Thank goodness Gutierrez decided to stuff us with everything else, too. All of the food here is top-notch.

Any kind of hot beef or cheesesteak.

Gabriel's Cheesesteak Hoagies, Ypsilanti, Westland, Saline

You know what they make at Gabriel's? Cheesesteaks. Lots and lots of them. They do have two other sandwiches, but you are here for that cheesesteak so don't get distracted. A soft, fresh bun gets loaded with hot, seared beef, and onions and mushrooms if you like. Blanketed with gooey American or Provolone cheese, this sandwich is like a pillow of deliciousness. You MUST add the hot red peppers to this beauty, to miss them would be a travesty. Less than $7 for this beauty.

Mr. Spot's, Ann Arbor

A popular place in Ann Arbor, Mr. Spots was one of our stops for Michigan's Best chicken wings. As is often the case, if someone recommends something else to try during a stop, we are all in. The cheesesteak is a personal weakness for me anytime, so after sampling a few dozen wings we had one of these beauties for dessert.

Steaming hot, loaded with shaved beef, coated in melty cheese and topped with these very hot peppers, it was cheesesteak perfection. No wonder Mr. Spots sometimes delivers hundreds of these to the University of Michigan football team as they head out for an away game.

Don't Edit

Any kind of hot beef or cheesesteak.

Izzy's Hoagie Shop, Ann Arbor

Big soft buns are overfilled with tender, flavorful steak and then loaded with extra cheese. Everything about this one is over the top, which is exactly what you want. Another spot with those delicious hot peppers, they add a jolt of heat and acidity to these lovely sandwiches. We love how there are two sizes to choose from, 10 or 6-inch, depending on your level of need to feed.

Golden Sands Golf and Bucket Bar, Mears

Hit the links on this fun, easy to play course located near Silver Lake Sand Dunes, then head on in for some really great nosh. Something a little different at Golden Sands is their tuned up Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak.  Yes, they've combined the best of two worlds. Grilled chicken and Philly steak get friendly with sauteed peppers and onions, then doused with spicy Buffalo sauce and creamy Boursin cheese sauce all nestled on a toasted bun and served hot, hot hot. It's like wings and hoagies got busy and had a baby that is super tasty.

The Bucket Bar is currently closed for the season, but will open for a "Miss You Summer Bash" February 15 and 16th, 2019. Then they'll reopen for the 2019 season on April 5.

There are a plethora of choices in this category to choose from, including fries, tater tots, nachos, or ... anyways, it seems like every spot in Michigan offers something that is literally a cheesy topping delivery system. These dishes are perfect for sharing with friends, and filling up.

Check out our whole list of 18 zany toppings for french fries in Michigan.

Bobcat Bonnies, Detroit, Wyandotte, Ferndale

You can get loaded tots or fries at Bobcat Bonnies. "Totchos" come loaded with spicy chorizo, house-made queso, pico di gallo, chipotle aioli and a heavy dusting of crushed Doritos. The "Kimchi Fries" are some of the best, with a huge punch of acidity from the fermented cabbage, balanced by the sweet soy of the super tender bulgogi beef on top. They've got several other versions to try, and they change seasonally.

Logan's Alley, Grand Rapids

Home to the "World Famous" Smothered Tots, Logan's does these up right. Crispy tots get covered in smokey bacon, cheddar jack cheese, sour cream and green onions. Or try Jak's Tots, a beguiling combination of tots with cheddar jack and goat cheese, roasted chicken and Sriracha hot sauce. Lucky you, Logan's opens at 7a.m., so you can enjoy these tots for breakfast.

Rodeo Mexican Kitchen, Houghton

We named Rodeo the best grab and go Mexican food in the state with good reason. Everything is made fresh and in-house at this cute little spot. Pick what you want, then LOAD it up. Choose from burritos, bowls, salads, tacos, posole or nachos. Pick a protein (beef, chicken, pork, fish, veggies), cheese, beans, rice, salsas, sour cream, guacamole ... you get the idea. Get it exactly how you want it, when you need it.

Loaded Kimchi fries from Seoul Kitchen in Ann Arbor. Amy Sherman | MLive.com

Anything that comes loaded.

Seoul Street, Ann Arbor

One of our top picks for Michigan's Best fried chicken, Seoul Street also makes some pretty mean Kimchi fries. Fresh fries get topped with caramelized Kimchi and onions, plus cheese, spicy mayo, sour cream and green onions. If you need more, you can add bacon, tofu, egg, grilled chicken or Bulgogi. The Bulgogi is delicious, tender marinated beef rib-eye that sounds like a crazy topping for fries, but is actually kind of perfect.

Swanky's Pizza, Grand Rapids

A simple, classic version of poutine can be had at Swanky's, located in Grand Rapids. This little place is a take-out joint, that also features pizza, wings and subs. One of the greatest things about this poutine is that it is available until 2 a.m. Which is most likely the absolute best time to indulge in poutine.

In addition to the traditional one, which features Swanky's hand cut fries, a rich brown gravy and white cheese curds, they also offer a few other untraditional ones. Chicken bacon ranch, chili cheese and bacon, a very popular Philly cheese steak version, and the intriguingly named "Hangover" which features scrambled eggs, bacon, maple syrup, cheese curds, and gravy topped with hot sauce.

Anything that comes loaded.

Cedar Springs Brewing Company, Cedar Springs

The name alone should clue you in on the fact that these are going to be some good munchies. Sloppy Fries from CSB feature Sloppy Shaun Sauce on them, which is a house-made sloppy joe style meat sauce, totally different than chili. Creamy cheese sauce, made from classic Velveeta, flows all over, and the very welcome note of freshness comes from a few thinly sliced jalapenos. The signature Red Flannel Fries have a thicker center, balanced out by thinner, crispier ends.

Beltline Bar, Grand Rapids

When they say loaded nachos, they mean it at the Beltline Bar. And while these are standard, classic nachos, the difference is in the quality of the ingredients and the super secret spices. Owner Jeff Lobdell is the only one who knows the blend that goes into the ground beef, and he mixes it up monthly in his private spice blending room. Beltline also grates all of their special colby cheese in house, for supreme meltability.

Loaded fries from Frankz in Frankfort. Amy Sherman | MLive.com

Don't Edit

Anything that comes loaded. Or the most munchiest of munchies of all time.

Frankz, Frankfort

Owner Joey Barcheski came up with his famous "man dip" while he was in college at Albion. One night, after a possible party, Barcheski and some friends were mighty hungry. They dug through the fridge, and challenged him to come up with something good to eat. Using everything he could find, he whipped up the first batch of "man dip".

Why is it called "man dip" you ask? Because it's the manliest dip around, of course.

"Man Dip" is a cream-based chili, that features spicy sausage instead of the traditional beef. It gets green chiles and tomatoes added, and then a splash of cream. All the things that Barcheski could find that night, and still the same ingredients he uses today. When you create perfection, you don't change it.

We were surprised at the depth of flavor the "man dip" has:  It's complex, spicy but not hot, with the cream giving it richness and balance. It really is delicious.

You can try the "man dip" at FrankZ either on top of tortilla chips, or on top of their signature french fries. We loved the "Betsie" which are fries loaded with "man dip", and then sprinkled with cheddar cheese and fresh green onions. It's a man of a meal for $6.50. Or try the "Ultra", which are fries with both "man dip" and chili, plus cheddar, for a crazy unique take on chili cheese fries.

Fredi the Pizzaman, Melvindale

Is it a pizza? Is it fries? It's both! When you're in the spot where you just can't decide, choose both from Fredi. He tops crispy fries with everything you'd find on your favorite pizza: tomato sauce, loads of cheese, pepperoni and anything else you'd like, broiled up to a perfect conflagration of flavors. Owner Fred Bello says that food is like a beautiful woman, "You never forget her." We're still dreaming of these.

El Jalapeno Mexican Market, Melvindale

Located inside a great Mexican market owned by the Ceron family, El Jalapeno offers up some loaded fries. This huge platter features a base of fries, your choice of protein, cheese, crema fresca, spicy mayo, green onions and tomatoes. We loved both the tender, succulent carne asada as well as the spicy chorizo. Huge portions of authentic Mexican, as well as some untraditional offerings like these yummy fries can be had at El Jalapeno.

Chilango's, Jackson

I mean seriously, it's called Trash Can Nachos. And it is insane. And insanely good. Our friends Carlos and Rachael Perez came up with this beauty of a dish, where everything gets stacked up in a tin can to be brought to the table for the big unveiling. When the can gets pulled, you are treated to house-made tortilla chips, loaded with chicken tinga, pork carnitas, and beef barbacoa. Then, they add black beans, two kinds of cheeses, homemade pico de gallo, and hot white queso sauce. Finished with fresh jalapenos, tomatoes and a drizzle of sour cream, this is one impressive dish.

Taystee's Burgers, Dearborn

The creative burgers here are exactly what you'd expect to come out of a 21-year-old brain. They feature fresh ground halal beef that gets delivered to the restaurant several times a week.

Ali's Natch-Yo Burger sounds crazy and tastes delicious. Loaded onto an onion bun you get that yummy burger plus lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, jalapenos, American, Swiss, Pepperjack cheeses, nacho cheese sauce, Doritos, mayo and hot sauce. Trust us, just try it.

The Volcano Burger, shown above, is a fiery take with locally cured beef bacon on it, as well as deep fried jalapenos. Other popular burgers include the Taystee's Special Burger, shown above. This burger gets topped with cole slaw, fries, spicy mayo, American cheese, tomato and a fried egg. Take a big bite and watch that yolk run right down your arm.

You won't believe that this joint is located inside a gas station. It is absolutely immaculate, and run by the absolutely nicest family around. Easy to grab and go, or take a seat at one of a handful of tables.

For safety's sake, and tasty sake, subs are a great option for the munchies. A good, well-made sub usually gets better after a few hours, as all the flavors start to meld together to become much more than the sum of their parts. Plan ahead, and you'll be all set for a great night.

We of course recommend staying away from the chains for the most part, and choosing one of our great Michigan subs.

Alcamo's Market, Dearborn

These are incredible subs, on delicious local bread, featuring imported Italian meats, at prices that you just can't beat anywhere. They are top-notch quality, with fantastic flavor, in a massive sub. And for only $5. Crazy. "I offer these subs at these prices as a gift to my customers,"  owner Emily Chimento  said. Well, we accept. Try one of these: the "Spicy Sicilian" if you like it hot, the "Super E", which features all the deli's most popular meats, or the classic "Famous Italian" with salami, capicolla, mortadella, cooked proscuitto, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Alcamo's sub sauce, which was one of the best that we tried. They keep the sauce separate so you can add it when you are ready, which I recommend you put on at least an hour before consumption for maximum flavor absorption.

Ventimiglia Italian Foods, Sterling Heights

A bustling deli located just north of Detroit, Ventimiglia has been open for 80 years, with 37 of them in their current location. A full-service deli, they make more than 500 subs a day, using only the best meats and cheeses. "We don't cut corners. We do things the right way," the owners said. The subs are massive, available on hard or soft rolls, and are packed with flavorful ingredients. The "Italian" is a perfect rendition, and I'm not gonna lie, it tasted almost more fabulous the next day. The "Eggplant" is very popular, and we loved it. Note: If you order a foot-long sub here, you will get an entire loaf of bread, split and stuffed. You've been warned.

Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders, Kalamazoo

You can pick from 40 different grinders at Kazoopy's, and they come in three sizes, 4, 8 or 16-inch. These are all baked sandwiches, and they stressed that hot is the only way to get them, as the bread is designed to run through the oven again. That bread is first-rate, baked fresh every few hours. Current owner Scott Strawhun credits Kazoopy's success with original owner Mark Roger's vision, legacy and recipes. The freshness at Kazoopy's really shines through, and the quality of the ingredients is apparent. They've got some creative flavors available if you like, or you can go classic with the #20 Italian, or the #30 Turkey Club. A standout for us was the Caribbean Chicken, which had a sweet heat that we just couldn't get enough of. And be sure to get something with their signature "Kazoopy sauce," a mayo blend that is addictive.

Ordering up a pizza is probably the easiest way to cure the munchies. Just make a quick call or order online, and hot, gooey love will be delivered directly to your door. You won't even have to feel bad if you eat a whole one all by your lonesome. No one will judge.

We recommend trying one of Michigan's Best pizzas, of course.

These are the twelve best pizzas in Michigan.

Licari's Sicilian Pizza Kitchen, Grand Rapids

The pizzas feature daily-made dough and a homemade sauce that tastes like real, fresh tomatoes. Featuring ingredients that range from classics like green pepper and onion (and an absolutely standout pepperoni) to slightly more exotic, like turkey meatballs, the pizzas at Licari's are just downright delightful.

You can get a traditional pie, or something classically Italian. The "Sfinciuni" a family recipe that consists of a half sheet pan of airy dough, studded with real chunks of Parmigiano-Reggiano (the king of cheeses), and topped with a thick sweet sauce, simple and amazing. "Schiacciatas" which is a stuffed, sandwich style pizza. Get the "Polpetta" one, with meatballs, salami, pepperoni and creamy ricotta for a trip back to Italy.

Riverside Pizza, Iron River

You'll have to travel to the Upper Peninsula for Riverside Pizzeria's fantastic pies, but trust us, it's worth the trip. These are the thin crust pizzas that the U.P. is known for, but the version at Riverside is truly superlative. The crust is thin, yet flaky, with a fantastic sauce. Simplicity is key here at Riverside. You can order by number from ten choices. The #8, sausage, pepperoncinis, and cheese has the perfect balance of richness, savoriness, and a good hit of twang. This is the pizza that Amy is not ashamed to admit that she continued to munch on all the way back to the bridge. You must try one pizza "cheese out." It's a whole new level of yum for cheese lovers. After the pizza comes out of the deck oven, a top layer of thinly-sliced mozzarella is added to slowly melt on the way to the table. Awesome.

#1-Jersey Mike's

Fresh, fresh, fresh is the name of the game at Jersey Mike's, and it shows. From white and wheat bread baked fresh every day, to meats and cheeses sliced fresh for each sub, it's what they do here. All vegetables are prepped fresh every day. They even cook their roast beef in-house. Their secret "juice" is their signature oil and vinegar dressing. We also appreciate that three different sizes are available, a mini, a regular, and a giant.

The "juice" is what did it for me. It gave this sub a great punchy quality, and elevated all the ingredients with its acidity, melding the whole thing into a good sub. Great bread-to-meat ratio, the whole bun was perfectly covered. And for some reason, Jersey Mike's is an expert at perfectly shredding lettuce for a sub. I have actually eaten Jersey Mike's several times since this search.

Special shoutout

Jersey Giant

This Michigan-based chain of sub shops is pretty top-notch. There about 20 locations around the state. Subs here are cold, loaded with quality meats and cheeses, and delicious. Try the #8, it's the sub that made them famous.
