ONTONAGON, MI – It took an Upper Peninsula jury just 10 minutes to convict a hunter who said he didn’t need a hunting license because of the “laws of nature.”
According to the Associated Press, 68-year-old Ron Ehinger of Ewen was charged with two counts of taking an antlered deer with 8 points or more. A jury recently decided the laws of Michigan apply to everyone who lives in Michigan.
The Daily Globe in Ironwood was the first to report the quirky story.
Ehinger, who demanded a jury trial and a 6-person jury hear the case, must pay fines and court costs.
He will also be liable for restitution, which is listed as $1,000 for a deer, $2,000 for an antlered deer and $500 per point on a deer with 8 points or more. That means a fine of $8,000 is possible.
