A typical abortion patient in Michigan is a 20-something single mother, according to the state’s 2018 abortion report.

More than 60% of women obtaining abortions live in metro Detroit; about half of abortion patients are African-American, and about half of patients have had at least one previous abortion, the report said.

The vast majority of abortions -- 85% -- were obtained in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and 95% were “self-pay” while the remaining 5% were paid by insurance.

A total of 26,716 abortions were reported in Michigan in 2018, a 0.5% increase from 2017, said the report, which was recently released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

However, that increase is attributed to women coming from other states coming to Michigan for the procedure; that went from 837 in 2017 to 1,162. The number of abortions obtained by Michigan women dropped slightly.

The online database below allows readers to look up the number of abortions from 2008-18 by county. The numbers are based on residence of the patients, not where the abortions was performed. You can click on a bar in the graphic to see the number.

The map below shows the abortion rate by county. That’s the number of abortions in 2018 per 1,000 women age 15 to 44. (There are several rural counties where the rates were not available due to small populations and low number of abortions.)
