HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI -- A 39-year-old Dollar Bay woman was arraigned in 97th District Court Monday after she allegedly stabbed a woman during an argument over a dog at McLain State Park on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
According to WLUC, Kay Hendrickson was charged with one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Her bond was set at $100,000 and she is due back in court for her next appearance on Sept. 4.
Hendrickson allegedly stabbed the 27-year-old victim during an altercation on the beach Sunday involving the victim’s dog. According to the Keweenaw Report, the owner says Hendrickson attacked the dog first, stabbing it in the neck. The victim went on to say she tried to stop Hendrickson from attacking the dog when she was also stabbed. It’s unclear what exactly caused the altercation.
The victim suffered wounds to her upper arm and abdomen. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released. Neither the injuries to the woman or the dog appear to be life-threatening.
McLain State Park is one of several in the state that have designated areas where dogs are allowed to be off a leash. The is a 443-acre park has two miles of sandy beach area along Lake Superior.
