WARREN, MI – The lone Gold’s Gym in Michigan is now open in the Detroit area.

The gym chain was founded by Joe Gold who has been referred to as the father of bodybuilding and is known for revolutionizing the sport with the equipment he designed for Gold’s Gym and later World Gym.

Celebrated bodybuilder, actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a devotee of Gold. He worked out at the original Gold’s in Venice, Calif., shortly after arriving in the United States in 1968.

The only Gold’s Gym in Michigan is at 30730 Hoover Road in Warren. The recently opened 11,000-square-foot facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, DBusiness Magazine reports.

Owner and general manager Donald Larson who has been a trainer or nine years told DBusiness it’s a “privilege” to open the first Gold’s in the state.

The gym offers free-weights, resistance machines, circuit training, cardio equipment, and unlimited classes in spin cycling, boxing and kickboxing, the gym website says. Personal training is also available.

Spin classes are live-streamed every hour, DBusiness reports. There’s a boxing ring on site along with a kick boxing room featuring 16 bags.

A basic membership, which includes unlimited access to the facility, costs $30 per month, the report said. Premium memberships, which add boxing and kickboxing instruction, cost $75 a month. Free passes are available for those who want to try the gym.

Founded in 1965, there are more than 700 Gold’s Gym locations on six continents serving about 3 million members. There was a Gold’s Gym in Ann Arbor; it opened in the mid-2000s but has since closed.

Joe Gold sold the gym in 1970. He opened World Gym in 1977, which he owned and operated until his death in 2004, at the age of 82. He remains a fixture in the bodybuilding community with the first Joe Gold Lifetime Achievement Award being presented at the 2012 World Gym International Convention in Las Vegas.
