ORION TOWNSHIP, MI -- A 29-year-old man has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault with intent to commit murder after he allegedly stabbed and strangled his mother to death Sunday morning, Oakland County sheriff’s officials said.

Garrett Lee Roberts, of Orion Township, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Oakland County District Court on the charges stemming from an incident on Oct. 20.

Police were called to a home on Rohr Road for a domestic disturbance shortly after midnight Sunday. When they arrived they found a woman -- identified as Delora Margaret Roberts, 59, and Garrett Roberts’ mother -- with multiple stab wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died, police said.

As part of the investigation, police interviewed Garrett Roberts’ uncle, who told police he heard screaming coming from the home. The uncle was in a neighbor’s house when he went over to see what was going on. The uncle says he saw Garrett Roberts strangling his mother with both hands and the uncle intervened, sheriff’s officials said.

When confronted, police said Roberts went and grabbed a knife from the kitchen and eventually stabbed his uncle in the shoulder multiple times. From there, Roberts fled the scene before being found close to the home by police. When police found him, Roberts was crying and covered in blood according to police.

The uncle was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Garrett Roberts was treated at a hospital for a suspected self-inflicted, non-life threatening stab wound to the neck, police said. He was then arrested and taken into custody. Police have yet to release any description on a possible motive or what caused the incident to occur.
