CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, MI — Sections of a popular Lake Michigan state park have been closed due to high water levels and storm damage.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Monday that portions of Fisherman’s Island State Park, located off Bell’s Bay Road, just south of Charlevoix in Charlevoix County, would be temporarily closed and “will reopen in the spring once the damage is assessed and a long-term solution is found.”

The closed areas include a day-use area and some campsites, as well as some sections of road.

"There are sections of the entrance road that are continually being eroded after large storm events," said Tom Copenhaver, Fisherman's Island State Park supervisor. "We've fixed the road several times this year after other high-wind events, but it seems every time we fix it another storm causes significant erosion."

Anyone planning to visit the park is encouraged to visit Michigan.gov/DNRClosures for updates on the temporary road closure.

For more information, contact Tom Copenhaver at 231-582-7523 or CopenhaverT@michigan.gov.
