As the holiday spirit reigns supreme, Americans are taking in their favorite Christmas movies – and Michiganders are no exception.
The state’s top choice? “A Christmas Story,” according to a survey by House Method. Michiganders aren’t alone in their love for the 1983 comedy; the movie is the favorite of 24 states, the survey said.
Will Farrell’s 2003 film “Elf” was the most popular in 11 states, including Michigan’s neighbors Indiana and Wisconsin, the survey said. “Home Alone” was the favorite of four states, followed by “It’s a Wonderful Life” in three states. “Die Hard” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” had two each.
The survey also asked whether “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie; 37 percent of Michiganders and 41 percent of Americans said it is.
The survey asked 4,580 Americans to select their favorite Christmas movie from the Rotten Tomatoes’ List of Top 50 Christmas Movies.
A separate study found that Michigan’s favorite Christmas movie is “Holiday Inn,” the 1942 Bing Cosby film. Streaming Observer used analyses of data from Rotten Tomatoes, Google Trends, and other public sources to determine each state’s top choice.
According to Streaming Observer, the holiday movie that is the favorite in the largest number of states in 2019 is “Gremlins.” Some of the holiday movies that multiple states love are “Batman Returns,” “Black Christmas,” “Die Hard” and “Home Alone.” In this analysis, not a single state was most obsessed with “A Christmas Story.”

“If you’re a purist who only considers movies like ‘White Christmas’ or “Miracle on 34th Street” to be holiday films, you might be a little surprised to see titles like ‘Batman Returns’ and ‘Die Hard,’ but every movie on the list has the holidays as a central theme,” Streaming Observer says.
