ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan’s highest paid employee - at least in terms of base salary - is no longer a football coach.

That’s according to UM’s 2019 salary report for its 49,000 employees. A searchable database is below.

The salary figures don’t include bonuses, incentives, grant payments or any compensation outside of agreed-upon base pay with the university.

Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs Marschall Runge topped the list of highest-paid employees, earning a base salary of $1.4 million - a significant increase from the $949,728 he earned in base pay in 2018. Runge, who came to UM in 2015, became dean of the UM Medical School at the beginning of 2016.

The next three highest paid employees were all from UM’s Athletic Department, beginning with Michigan football Defensive Coordinator Don Brown, who earned $1 million in base salary, followed by Athletic Director Warde Manuel, whose salary increased from $869,933 in 2018 to $990,000 in 2019.

First-year Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis was next on the list, earning $900,000 in 2019 as part of his three-year contract.

While Michigan football Coach Jim Harbaugh earned a base salary of $550,000 in 2019, his overall compensation was much higher. Harbaugh is due a pay raise next month that will push his yearly income to more than $8 million.

Also earning $900,000 in base salary was UM President Mark Schlissel, who received a nearly $50,000 pay increase this past year. Prior to that, he received a 3.5-percent raise, making it the fourth-consecutive year UM’s Board of Regents approved a bump in pay.

Erik Lundberg, the school’s chief investment officer, was next, earning $850,000 in base pay in 2019 after making $750,000 in 2018. Lundberg takes home significantly more than his base salary, however. Records obtained last year by the Detroit Free Press showed Lundberg earned more than $2 million in compensation in 2016.

Michigan Medicine Chief Financial Officer Paul Castillo, who’s had the position since 2011, was the next highest paid employee at UM in 2019, earning a base salary of $811,331, after making $787,700 in 2018.

The UM Health System’s Chief Operating Officer Anthony Denton was next on the list, earning a base salary of $686,254.

Chief Financial Officer Kevin Hegarty earned $640,000 for the next spot on the list. James Woolliscroft, UM’s former medical school dean, who stepped down in late 2015, rounded out the top 10. He currently is a UM professor of internal medicine, earning $637,403 in 2019.

Faculty salary increases at UM’s Ann Arbor campus averaged 2.9%, according to figures from the university’s salary report, released Monday, Dec. 9. Salary increases for staff averaged 3.1%, while merit salary increases for executive officers averaged 3.06%. Merit increases for deans averaged 3.46%.

The searchable database below includes all UM base salaries.
