Meanwhile, the 25 counties with the lowest birth rates are all in northern Michigan, including 10 counties in the Upper Peninsula, state data shows.

Below is a ranking of Michigan's 83 counties based on a five-year average of their birth rate, which is the number of births per 1,000 residents. (A five-year average was used to even out year-to-year fluctuations in smaller counties.)

For comparison purposes, the statewide birth rate for 2014-18 was 11.3 births per 1,000 residents.
About 27% of Michigan births during 2014-18 were to mothers under age 25, and 42% of the mothers were unmarried.
In regards to educational attainment, 12% of Michigan babies born during 2014-18 had mothers who hadn't finished high school while 30% were born to women with at least a bachelor's degree.
