Forest Hills schools, others cancel or delay classes after severe storm

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Several schools have closed or delayed starts Thursday, Sept. 12, after a powerful storm hit West Michigan the night before and left thousands without power.

Among closings: Forest Hills Public Schools; Innovation Central and Grand Rapids Montessori in Grand Rapids; Lincoln School and Lincoln Development Center in Kent Intermediate School District; Countryside Elementary School in Byron Center and Huron Potawatomi Head Start.

Forest Hills reported outages at multiple businesses. Childcare is open.

Aquinas College has delayed the start of classes to 10:30 a.m., while classes before 11 a.m. at Spectrum Theater and ATC at Grand Rapids Community College have been cancelled. Classes that start at 11 a.m. will be held.

Newaygo Public Schools have been delayed two hours.

Consumers Energy reported 50,000 customers lost power with 50 mph winds and possible tornadoes in West Michigan. By 4:30 a.m. Thursday, about 32,000 Consumers Energy customers, including 23,000 in Kent County, remained without.
