Red Wings select Robert Mastrosimone, Albert Johansson in second round, Albin Grewe in third

The Detroit Red Wings had three picks in a span of 13 selections late in the second round and early in the third Saturday at the NHL Draft, taking a pair of wingers and a defenseman.

The Red Wings selected Robert Mastrosimone at No. 54. He’s a 5-10, 170-pound left wing who played for Chicago in the USHL, collecting 31 goals and 29 assists in 54 games. He has committed to Boston University.

“Out of his 170 lbs., 169.5 is heart and desire,” Red Line Report said of Mastrosimone.

Red Line Report went on to say: "High energy forward who plays a fast and hard north/south game. Small, fast and skates with some explosiveness -- shifty with a quick-twitch and deceptive acceleration. He’s got a laser of a shot and quick release, beating goalies cleanly from the outside and in close if given the slightest hint of daylight. Pucks come off his blade in a blur, and he’s also a deft passer. Uses sneaky vision to find the smallest of open passing lanes in all three zones. Creates chances and space for teammates by drawing in defensemen with patience, then dishing with touch off both sides of the blade. Avid competitor who works his ass off and is not afraid of going to the tough areas to get after pucks and opponents. Pesky defender who attacks the puck, can play in all situations as a go-to guy. Works his bag off on the penalty kill.”

That was a pick Detroit received from Vegas in the 2018 Tomas Tatar trade.

Detroit took defenseman Albert Johansson (6-0, 165) of Farjestads Juniors in Sweden at pick No. 60. He shoots left and picked up five goals and 24 assists in 40 games.

This was the pick the Red Wings received from San Jose in the Gustav Nyquist deal.

Detroit selected Swedish right wing Alblin Grewe in the third round (No. 66). He’s 5-11, 190, who tallied 13 goals and 21 assists in 25 games with the Djurgarden Juniors, in addition to a whopping 102 penalty minutes.

Red Line Report said of Grewe: “One of the season’s biggest disappointments for Red Line. Seemed like a surefire first rounder with a high skill level entering the year, but his production was spotty and his effort and compete levels inconsistent. Was timid about the physical game and sometimes acted as though he was injured to draw penalties on legal hits. Makes some nice plays and has obvious skills and drive, but tends to disappear. Strong with the puck and can carry it in deep. Shields it well and can work down deep smartly if he wants to. Has soft hands and really great vision. Very good snap shot with a quick release, but has trouble finding the open spots. Excellent stick skills and deft moves but overhandles the puck and needs to use his linemates better. Needs to be quicker off the mark and drive the net a bit more. A real enigma.”

DobberHockey Draft Guide said of Grewe: “A pain-in-the-butt type of power forward, Grewe plays with a lot of speed and loves to hit and disturb wherever he ventures. He‟s not big at 6-0, 176 but he knows how to make his presence felt. Moreover, he showed excellent production in the SuperElit thanks to his 13 goals and 34 points in 25 games. Grewe was expected to play a big role for Sweden at the U18 Worlds but managed to score only two goals in seven games. NHL-certainty is high and he could develop into an excellent multicategory player but it remains to be seen how his offense will translate to pro.”
