A police report says the death of former Detroit Red Wings player Greg Johnson was likely a suicide, according to The Detroit News.
Johnson, who played for the Red Wings from 1993-97, was found by his wife the morning of July 7, according to Rochester Police, with a gun and single bullet near him. There was no suicide note.
“We couldn’t believe it,” Tom Laidlaw, Johnson’s longtime agent, told The Detroit News.
Kristen Johnson told police she was unaware her husband even owned a gun. The Oakland County Medical Examiner declined to discuss findings from an autopsy, according to The News.
The 48-year-old Johnson spent 14 years in the NHL, including the last seven seasons with the Nashville Predators. He served as the Predators’ captain from 2002-06.
Johnson had a career-high of 18 goals twice, in 1995-96 with the Red Wings and 2001-02 with Nashville. Detroit traded Johnson to Pittsburgh in January 1997.
