Paul Haynes apparently found a new school and is staying in the Big Ten.
The former Michigan State defensive backs coach is expected to be hired as Minnesota’s new cornerbacks coach, according to a report on Friday by Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.
Haynes spent the last two seasons coaching Michigan State’s secondary. Minnesota cornerbacks coach Rod Chance left the program to take the same position at Oregon last week.
Mel Tucker was named Michigan State’s new head coach last week and replaced Mark Dantonio, who announced his retirement on Feb. 4 after 13 seasons. Tucker has officially announced seven of his 10 on-field assistants and only two are holdovers from Dantonio’s staff in Ron Burton and Mike Tressel. Burton will coach the defensive line while Tressel, who was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach last season, doesn’t have an announced title yet. Former Michigan State All-American and assistant coach Harlon Barnett is back with the program after being named the Spartans’ defensive backs coach on Thursday.
Wisconsin’s Ted Gilmore hired as Michigan State’s TEs coach
Haynes had two stints coaching defensive backs at Michigan State, from 2005-10, and the last two seasons. He was the head coach at Kent State for five years before being fired after the 2017 season. When Barnett left to take over as the defensive coordinator at Florida State, Dantonio hired Haynes to fill that role.
