ALLEN PARK -- In a whirlwind Tuesday afternoon, the Lions announced running back Kerryon Johnson was headed to injured reserve while safety Quandre Diggs was traded to Seattle.

The team confirmed they traded Diggs to the Seahawks paired with a 2021 seventh-round pick for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft. Detroit currently has Tracy Walker, Tavon Wilson and rookie Will Harris at the safety position albeit with two freshly-opened roster spots.

Players were quick to react on social media to the news of a team-voted captain being traded to a team in the NFC for a mid-round draft pick. Lions cornerback Darius Slay had some choice words, so this post contains some language.

Diggs came to Detroit as a sixth-round pick back in 2015, which was Martin Mayhew's last draft at the helm.

The former Pro Bowl alternate selection had struggled through Detroit's first six games, but remained a beloved fixture in the locker room and secondary. He was voted one of Detroit's two defensive captains by the players during the preseason.

This post will continue to update as more react to the news of the trade.

Diggs was set to count $4.6 million against the cap this season, $7 million next season and then $7.3 million in 2021. The Lions will save about $3.5 million in salary-cap space next year thanks to the trade.

For those in need of a reminder heading into the New York game, this is the second straight season GM Bob Quinn traded a popular fixture among players and fans. The Lions traded wide receiver Golden Tate to Philadelphia around this time last year for a fourth-round pick.
