Rain moves into Michigan overnight, severe weather risk widespread Tuesday

After a picture-perfect weekend to kick off the fall season, most of Michigan is staring down another threat of showers, thunderstorms and the potential for severe weather.

While scattered showers and the occasional rumble are possible across Lower Michigan Monday, Sept. 24, the threat of severe weather is strongest Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday.

Before that, Monday is mostly looking at seasonable temperatures, and gradually increasing humidity paired with growing cloud cover as the day progresses. Some showers and scattered thunderstorms could move into Lower Michigan Monday evening and overnight.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms are most likely in Southeast Michigan and into the Thumb between 8 p.m. Monday night and 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. West Michigan could be looking at some isolated showers Monday afternoon, and Northern Michigan and the U.P. could see some showers or "some stronger storms in the late/afternoon/evening."

"The crystal clear skies of the weekend will be replaced today (Monday) with thickening low clouds and scattered showers by afternoon," the weather service reports.

Monday and Tuesday will serve as the warmest and most humid days of the week before another strong cold front moves in early Wednesday morning and shakes things up.

Monday's showers or potential storms are not expected to be severe, but Tuesday night's could bring some heavy rain, lightning, damaging winds, local flooding and large hail to Lower Michigan.

The National Weather Service gives Southeast Michigan the greatest threat of severe storms, but the potential remains for of Lower Michigan and the southeast corner of the Upper Peninsula.

"Numerous showers are expected this evening and overnight as a warm front lifts across the state," the NWS reports Monday. "The chance for additional showers, along with isolated thunderstorms, will exist Tuesday and Tuesday night.

"A cold front will sweep through the region Tuesday night, bringing drier conditions for the late week period."
