Michigan may be on the verge of losing a highly touted member of its 2018 recruiting class.

Former four-star prospect Myles Sims has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed Thursday.

It’s unclear when Sims, a 6-foot-3, 183-pound cornerback, placed his name in there -- or his reasoning -- but allows other schools to contact him about a potential transfer. The news was first reported Thursday by The Athletic.

The Atlanta, Georgia, native took a redshirt after he did not play in any games during the 2018 season, his freshman year at Michigan.

Sims’ name has been oddly quiet when it comes to the cornerback position this spring. Jim Harbaugh mentioned him earlier this month as fighting for a rotational spot in practice, with Lavert Hill and Ambry Thomas both expected to fill the two starting slots this fall.

Redshirt freshman Vincent Gray has since emerged, as has Jaylen Kelly-Powell and Gemon Green, cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich said on Tuesday.

Asked about Sims, who was ranked by 247Sports as the 17th-best cornerback in the 2018 recruiting class, Zordich said he needs to be more consistent in practice.

“He put together a couple nice practices, and I think he’s got to stay and get better every day,” Zordich said. “He’s got the skill set -- he has it -- he’s just got to get consistent.”

If Sims does decide to transfer, he would be the first member of Michigan’s 2018 recruiting class -- third in the Big Ten, and No. 22 nationally -- to depart the program.

The Wolverines were slated to wrap up their spring practice schedule this week in Ann Arbor.

WHITEOUT: Penn State announced Thursday plans for a “whiteout” for its Oct. 19 game against Michigan. PennLive.com reports shirts are already on-sale for the game, considered the biggest of the season at Beaver Stadium. No word yet on a kickoff time.
