A crowd gathers for 2019 Herb Day.

Hundreds of herb and garden enthusiasts are expected to gather Saturday for the 23rd annual Herb Day on the grounds of Grace Presbyterian Church in east Montgomery.

The event, which will take place at the corner of Bell Road and Atlanta Highway, is from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m.

“Last year the annual Herb Day Event had over 1,000 attendees in an open-air location,” event organizer Jean Szabo said. “Our expanded social media advertising reached thousands of gardening and herb-loving friends.”

This year, at least 14 herb and garden-related vendors will be offering a variety of live plants, herbs, herbal skin-care products, herbal bath and body items, local honey products, day lilies, and more favorites.

This year's Herb Day will be held on June 6 on the grounds of Grace Presbyterian Church in east Montgomery.

Expert gardeners will be sharing tips and nutrition information also will be provided.

Garden ornaments and decor also will be among the offerings, Szabo said.

“It’s a fun day of shopping in the open air with friends under the shade of those beautiful large pecan trees. And at the same time, we will be observing social distancing and wearing masks,” she said.

Herb Day is sponsored by the Alabama Herb Society. Admission is free.

“Our goal as a non-profit volunteer organization is to promote the study, growth, and use of herbs in an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere,” Szabo said. “Today more people are turning to the use of fresh herbs in cooking to enhance their favorite dishes. And they also are using herbal skin care products.”

The group is maintaining the culinary herb garden at the Governor's Mansion and is in the process of rehabilitating and expanding the Crump Senior Center garden, Szabo added.

Grace Presbyterian Church will be selling soft drinks and bottles of water throughout the day.
