Montgomery police have arrested a man in the shooting death of 19-year-old Shontell Samuel on South Court Street Thursday afternoon.

Beontre Cashard Sanders, 19, was charged with intentional murder in the death of Samuel. The two lived at the same address and were in a dating relationship, Montgomery police Sgt. David Hicks said.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of South Court Street on Thursday after 2 p.m. when a shooting was reported to police. Upon arrival, officers found Samuel with a fatal gunshot wound inside a duplex, Montgomery police Sgt. Jarrett Williams said at the scene.

Sanders was arrested at the scene, Hicks said, and was charged shortly after 10 p.m., according to court record. He's being held on a $150,000 bond at the Montgomery County Jail.

Samuel's death is the 35th homicide case for Montgomery police this year, eight cases less than the number from the same time last year.

At the scene, officers searched for evidence outside of the home as neighbors gathered on the outskirts of yellow police tape. Police took notes as a woman in scrubs spoke between her sobs. Montgomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey and investigators from his office gathered around the duplex's opened door and peered into the home, before walking away with their heads hung low.

The shooting took place two blocks south of the Governor's mansion and a block north of Sidney Lanier High School. Lanier was placed on lockdown, and police were stationed on campus as a precaution, Montgomery Public Schools Senior Communication Officer Tom Salter said via email.

Salter said Nixon and Fews Elementary schools were also placed on lockdown and school officials delayed dismissal while police searched for a suspect. About 30 minutes after the Lanier lockdown was announced, it was lifted for all three schools.
