MOULTRIE, Ga. -- A Saturday afternoon traffic stop of a car in which a child was not restrained properly resulted in the arrest of the driver and a passenger after police found suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the car.
A Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped the 2001 Mercury Marquis at about 1:36 p.m. on Sardis Church Road. The car, driven by Stephanie Leach, also had an out of date registration.
While speaking with Leach, the deputy noticed the smell of green marijuana coming from the passenger compartment, police said. Leach admitted having digital scales and a glass pipe.
Passenger Jason Allen Aldridge told the officer that he was on probation and that he stuffed the marijuana under the seat, sheriff’s reports said, and a search there turned up a clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana. A windbreaker jacket in the driver’s seat also contained a marijuana grinder and another pipe.
When Leach could not reach a friend or family member to pick up the children in the car the deputy called the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, which arranged for their transportation.
Leach, 35, 1086 Hwy. 93, Sale City, was charged with driving without license, driving while tag suspended, possession of marijuana, possession of drug-related objects and child restraint violation.
Aldridge, 32, 981 Annie McGee Road, was charged with possession of marijuana.
