In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, public transport services in Mumbai have been shut for the last two months. Now with things getting back to the normal, means of public transport are also gradually resuming services but only employees engaged in essential services are being allowed to ply as of now. However, the government will soon resume the transport service for the general public as well and therefore, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Metro One are preparing themselves for the resumption of services post lockdown.

Metro One has been making necessary preparation at its stations as well as in its compartments. The company has posted stickers in the compartments asking the passengers to maintain a distance of about one and a half meters. Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), which runs the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Mumbai Metro One, is also planning to stop the use of plastic tokens and introduce disposable paper tickets.

While there have been no final orders regarding the date on which monorail or metro services will resume operations, MMRDA and Metro 1 management have made it clear that they are ready to start the service at any time if ordered by the state government.

Once the Metro-1 services resume, the number of passengers in a rake is also set to be reduced. Earlier, 200 people could sit whereas 200 could travel while standing. However, the new arrangement will see a seating capacity of 100 people and only 75 will be allowed to stand in a coach.

As Mumbai has started receiving pre-monsoon showers, the two transport wings have undertaken pre-monsoon work.  The Metro and monorail signal system is also being put under maintenance. Alongside, MMRDA has pruned trees along the monorail's 19.64 km elevated route that could pose a threat during monsoon.
