The city of Mumbai and other nearby areas will be facing Cyclone Nisarga on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. While the Uddhav Thackeray-led government had earlier announced phase-wise relaxation from the lockdown, an important decision was taken by the Chief Minister, where Section 144 has been imposed in Mumbai and nearby areas of the city, for 24 hours on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.
This decision was taken keeping the cyclone in mind and to ensure people's safety during the crisis. As per the decision, the government will not ease the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown scheduled on June 3, 2020, and as of now, this has been postponed by two days. People living in coastal regions of the state have been strictly advised to stay home until Thursday, June 4, 2020.
Officials have been evacuating families living around the coast, as their lives could be affected due to Cyclone Nisarga.
Mumbai and other regions in Maharashtra experienced rainfall with strong winds on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 and as per information given by the IMD, cyclone Nisarga will make landfall these areas in the afternoon on June 3. Observing the intensity, experts have put the Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and many other localities on red alert and people have been asked to stay home.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also issued the dos and don'ts to be followed during the cyclone. Entry to promenades, beaches, and some specific areas will be strictly prohibited as per Sec 144. Further, officers have also evacuated more than 60,000 residents from some districts, as the cyclone Nisarga could pose risk in those areas.
IMD and weather experts have predicted landfall in Alibaug and are expecting high tides, with wind gushing at 120kmph.
State government officials have also decided that selected flights and train services may be allowed, and the decisions will be taken after observing the situation on the day due to the cyclone.
