A pedestrian was violently thrown into the air after being hit by a car being pursued by police in Cental London.

City London Police confirmed a pedestrian seriously hurt was hit by a BMW being pursued by a unmarked Metropolitan Police car.

The 29-year-old man was hit on a zebra crossing by a white BMW on Fetter Lane in Holborn at 12.19pm.

Fetter Lane, which is close to Chancery Lane in Central London would have been busy with City workers out for lunch.

A witness said they saw the victim fly “at least 10 feet in the sky” before landing metres away during the crash.

They said the victim had been using the zebra crossing before being hit by the car.

Thankfully, they said paramedics were on the scene within about “20 seconds”.

The victim is still in hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Police chase crash

City of London Police, in whose area the crash happened, also confirmed the incident had been reported to the police watchdog because the car involved in the crash was being chased by an unmarked Met Police car.

In the statement by the police a spokesperson said: “The City of London Police is currently investigating a hit and run collision which occurred at 12.19pm on Monday June 24 2019 on Fetter Lane.

"A man, aged 29, has been left with serious injuries after he was hit by a car on a zebra crossing.

The white BMW involved was being followed by an unmarked Metropolitan Police vehicle, prior to colliding with the victim.

“The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 020 7601 2999.

"Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers via their website or by calling 0800 555 111.

"Officers are also asking the public to report any potential sightings of the white BMW, which will have considerable damage to the windscreen is missing a wing mirror on the driver's side.”
