RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond firefighters responded to a blaze at the former Midlothian Village apartments around noon on Thursday.

Three people - two adults and one child - were able to escape the fire, but will likely be displaced, fire officials said.

The blaze started on the third floor of an apartment, and also impacted a vacant unit. The Red Cross is helping 33 displaced residents.

The apartments are currently undergoing renovation, but the fire did not occur in any of those areas.

No one was injured in the blaze.

“It wasn’t a lot of flames, just a lot of smoke and hidden fires, probably some things did get burned,” Capt. Christopher Armstrong with the Richmond Fire Department said. “They’re not going to be able to stay here tonight.”

Fire officials did not say if the apartment had working smoke detectors, but did say the initial call was for some type of alarm.
