First Alert Weather Day: Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Central, Southern Virginia
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Friday is a First Alert Weather Day for the potential for heavy rain and a few scattered strong storms Friday afternoon and evening.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10pm for much of Central and Southern Virginia, though the watch will likely be cancelled early in the Northern part of the watch area. In the Richmond area the storm chance drops by 7pm.
The Storm Prediction Center now has all of central and southern VA in the slight risk of severe weather. That is a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather threat scale and all the counties that are shaded in yellow:
Heavy rain will be likely during the afternoon and evening, especially south of I-64. Gusty winds will also be possible with a few strong storms. There is a low end tornado threat.
The Weather Prediction Center has most of central and southern Virginia under a marginal to slight risk for flash flooding.

Lingering showers and clouds will persist through the overnight and into Saturday morning.
