A milestone nearly 15 years in the making after two failed referenda, the Middleton-Cross Plains School District celebrated Tuesday as administrators and officials held a ground breaking ceremony on the site of the new pope farm elementary school.

The new building will help alleviate some of the pressure on district schools, which have seen record growth within the past decade.

"We’re really taking advantage of the surroundings adjacent to the pope farm conservancy,” said George Mavroulis, superintendent for the district. “We will have a large group area right off the conservancy that can be used by the friends of pope farm conservancy and by the community. So we really see this as one large campus not just our school but the conservancy as well.”

The K-4 school is expected to be ready for the 2020 school year.
