Dozens of law enforcement officers gathered to remember a Columbus Division of Police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty 25 years ago.

On Dec. 10, 1993, Officer Chris Clites was killed while trying to apprehend an armed robbery suspect.

“He’s not forgotten,” said Ofc. John Holloway, who was with the fallen officer that night. “The sacrifice that he gave for the city of Columbus and the citizens is not forgotten.”

Holloway was one of the many officers to join members of Clites’ family as they participated in a memorial service and motorcade that passed the Columbus Police Memorial, before concluding at Clites’ grave site. Monday evening’s events were organized by members of the 5th precinct, where Clites worked.

“These guys that are in this substation are the ones that said ‘Hey, we’re going to do this this year,” said Carmen Clites, Ofc. Clites’ brother. “They didn’t have to. Nobody’s mandated to do any of this stuff, but they do it because of their love.”

Clites served as an officer for about 3-and-a-half years. He was 26 years old when he was killed.
