NEWARK – Residents of South Hampton Road, Plymouth Place and Coventry Circle may be dancing in the streets later this year. Newly paved streets.

Roads in the subdivision in the north end of Newark, between Mount Vernon Road and North 21st Street, have not been been paved since 1986. But, this is the year.

"I feel like I won the lottery," South Hampton Road resident Tom Armstrong said.

In the last 33 years, residents have complained about potholes, watched the potholes get patched, notice the patches falling apart, drive over the same potholes again, lobby city officials for the roads to be paved, and see the potholes patched again.

"I've called the street department numerous times," Armstrong said. "They've always responded by doing this patch work. This gravel just breaks up. We've all swept up pounds and pounds of gravel and put it in the Dumpster.

"All the neighbors are on their wit's end on the street. It is in desperate need of repair. Yea, I think we're due."

Plymouth Place resident Ron Pachuta said, "It's about time. It's a nice neighborhood. We need good streets."

A section of South 21st Street, just north of the railroad tracks, will be resurfaced this year.

The city will pave about 7.6 miles of its 220 lane miles of streets this year. The resurfacing project will be bid out to contractors on Wednesday, ensuring the work will get done this year.

"We bid early when money from the previous year is carrying over, so then I know what I got," City Engineer Brian Morehead said. "Last year, we got grant funding in July. But, contractors were busy then."

South 21st Street, which has been deteriorating for years around the railroad tracks next to Packaging Corporation of America, will be paved this year from West Main Street to Wells Avenue, a distance of one-half mile.

Bill Williams, of Johnstown, pulling onto South 21st from a driveway, said, "Put something down that will last. The semi trucks tear it up. And, they've got to make it wider."

East Main Street will be paved from Madison Avenue to East Main Parkway. Thornwood Drive will be paved from Faye Drive to River Road. West Main Street will be resurfaced from Coffman Road to Thornwood Drive.
