Newark native wins service honor at Otterbein

The Charles J. Ping award recognizes outstanding community service by undergraduate students in 41 Ohio colleges and universities which make up Ohio Campus Compact, a nonprofit membership organization. The Charles J. Ping Student Service Award recognition is granted annually to one undergraduate per Ohio Campus Compact member institution.

One of nine 2019 awards was granted to Haylie Shmoll of Newark, Ohio, a student at Otterbein University in Westerville.

After learning about the food insecurity some of her peers and community members face day-to-day, Shmoll and a group of students formed The Promise House, a community resource center and food pantry where students, faculty, and staff can volunteer. The project has gained momentum in the community and continues to grow.

"The Promise House is a mission, an investment in each other, our institution and our peers. It is a continuous effort to make sure that every student at Otterbein feels like they are part of the family. We are all Cardinals with one promise: to make sure all students succeed," wrote Shmoll in her student essay.
