Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper hospitalized after being struck by Newark driver

Two men, including an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, were hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash on Ohio 37 on Sunday.

According to a press release from the patrol, the crash occurred at 10:48 a.m. Sunday on Ohio 37 in Licking County.

At that time Trooper Steve Mahl, 45, was traveling north on the road in a 2018 Dodge Charger. Cody Masters, 23, of Newark was traveling south on Ohio 37 in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Mahl is with the Granville Post of the patrol, but the investigation is being handled by the Lancaster Post.

According to the patrol, Masters drove off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and went left of center and struck the patrol cruiser. 

Mahl was taken to OSU Medical Center with serious injuries and Masters was taken to Grant Medical Center with serious injuries. Both men were wearing their seatbelts.

The state patrol is still investigating the crash. It was assisted by the Licking County Sheriff's Office, Hebron Police, Walnut Township Fire and EMS and Millersport Fire and EMS.
