After more than a year, the Main Street construction project is nearly finished, with a complete reopening tentatively set for June 12. To celebrate, city officials are planning to shut down the road again – for a few hours each weekend, at least.
Mayor Jerry Clifton and City Manager Tom Coleman envision closing down Main Street and turning it into a pedestrian mall during weekend evenings and allowing restaurants to set up tables in the street.
“We’ve got to think about getting people back and making it a destination again,” Clifton said, adding that retail businesses could also have space for sidewalk sales."
great idea but why go there to be abused by foul language and rude ud students? i much prefer a quite setting where every other word is not a cuss word and walking down the sidewalk is no longer possible when six students walking abreast is not possible since they expect you to get out of there way. there are other venues that are more pleasant.

Great idea! How about free parking to draw customers back??
Where would you park? I always use the lots on the right side of Main street.
College is out no one is rushing to get back to main street to eat .

Close Main Street to traffic?!?! How would we get there yet alone the already terrible parking problems. Think people. Think.
