Rise & Shine! Today is Oct. 15, the 288th day of the year — 77 days remain in 2019. On this day in 1951, “I Love Lucy” debuted on CBS. The sitcom starring Lucille Ball and real-life husband Desi Arnaz enjoyed a run of six seasons that produced 180 episodes. In 2002, TV Guide ranked “I Love Lucy” as the No. 2 choice on its 50 greatest shows list, trailing only “Seinfeld.”

HERE & NOW

• There is perhaps no more of a hot-button issue in Newport than schools (OK, maybe hotels). After months of attempting to form a bond with neighboring communities, the time has come for decisions to be made regarding building a new high school, as well as devising a plan for preschool and kindergarten students.

The City Council and School Committee will take part in a joint discussion in the City Hall council chamber Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. City residents are encouraged to come make comments. There will be no votes at this meeting.

The School Building Committee, co-chaired by School Committee members Louisa Boatwright and Rebecca Bolan, will hold a meeting in the Newport Area Career & Technical Center, Room 907, on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. to take expected votes on the needed school facilities.

Daily News reporter Sean Flynn has more on what’s expected from the meetings.

•  A statue of Christopher Columbus was vandalized Monday in Providence, covered in red paint and adorned with a sign that read “Stop spreading genocide.” In Newport, the 25th annual Columbus Day Parade was held, though the crowd was sparse in certain areas of the route.

“I don’t think as many people come to the Columbus Day events these days for a reason,” said Meredith MacDonald of Portsmouth, who was standing in Washington Square at the beginning of the parade route. “A different version of Columbus, and what he did, has come out since I was taught history in school. I didn’t know how badly he and the Spanish conquerors treated the indigenous peoples."
