Prosecutors say the woman only escaped by climbing naked out of a window in the middle of the night.

Authorities believe she was choked, raped and stabbed by 26-year-old James Simpson at her Springfield home.

Simpson was charged Tuesday with six felonies, including first-degree rape and first-degree assault.

According to a probable cause statement, a woman invited Simpson — who she had known for about 24 hours — over to her home early on Jan. 23.

The statement says Simpson punched the woman, shoved her down the hallway into the bedroom and choked her until she lost consciousness.

Simpson then allegedly cut the woman's clothes off with a knife and raped her while holding the knife to her throat.

The statement says Simpson also stabbed the woman twice in the back, puncturing one of her lungs, but she was able to kick him away, crawl out of the window and run to a neighbor's home for help.

Police say the description of the suspect's tattoos — a swastika and one with the words "family values" — helped them identify Simpson as the alleged perpetrator. He was arrested on Monday after running away and struggling with officers, according to the statement.

Simpson is being held in the Greene County Jail on $250,000 bond and does not have an attorney listed for this case.

Simpson's charges include rape, assault, armed criminal action and resisting arrest. The rape and assault charges carry possible life sentences.
