Police say a Springfield man forced his way into an apartment and then shot someone who was hiding in a closet.

Keith Ruble, 34, was charged Saturday with burglary, first-degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with the weekend shooting.

According to a probable cause statement, police were dispatched to the Watermill Park Apartments on Valley Water Mill Road at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, for reports of a shooting.

A witness, who used to be in a relationship with Ruble, allegedly reported that Ruble came to her apartment that night and forced his way inside.

Once inside, the witness said Ruble pulled out a handgun and started searching for another man, who was hiding in a closet, according to the statement.

Once Ruble found the man, the statement says he fired several shots into the closet where the victim was hiding.

The statement says the victim was hit in the arm and the head but he survived and was able to talk with police about what happened.

After the shooting, the statement says Ruble drove to Urbana and turned himself in.

In an interview with police, Ruble allegedly admitted to getting drunk that night, forcing his way into the apartment and shooting the man in the closet.

He allegedly told police his intention was to "prove a point."

Ruble is being held in the Greene County Jail without bond. He does not have an attorney listed for this case and faces a potential life sentence if convicted.
