Police say a man was killed in a crash Thursday evening in south Springfield.

Matthew T. Brown, 43, was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead after a crash just before 7 p.m. near the intersection of Campbell Avenue and Republic Road, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department.

The release says Brown's Mitsubishi hatchback was traveling southbound on Campbell when it was hit by another vehicle, which caused Brown to lose control, cross the center line and collide with a northbound vehicle.

Police say one of the involved vehicles, believed to be a stolen Budget rental box truck, left the scene of the crash. The department is asking for the public's help identifying that driver.

Anyone with information on the crash or the identity of the box truck driver is asked to call the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

The police department's traffic section is investigating the crash.
