Late Friday, Springfield police said that a 46-year-old motorcyclist died as a result of a traffic crash Thursday night.

Officers responded at 10:50 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of College Street and Broadway Avenue. According to a news release, the rider of the motorcycle, Joseph Webb of Springfield, was eastbound on College and appeared to have failed to negotiate a curve in the road. He crossed into the westbound lane of travel, striking the front of a westbound Chrysler 300 driven by 31-year-old Kyle Prugger of Republic.

Webb was ejected from the motorcycle, suffered critical injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he died Friday afternoon. Police said they notified his next of kin. The other driver was not injured.

Police said it's not clear if impairment is involved at this time, and an investigation is ongoing. They said this is the seventh fatality crash in Springfield so far this year. Eight people have died in traffic crashes in 2020.
